Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale
Description
Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale — Ibaraki, Japan, 7% ABV. Brewed with ancient red rice (akaimai), this ale from Kiuchi Brewery occupies a unique position between craft beer and sake. Ancient rice was the grain of choice for sake production before modern polished varieties took over; its use here lends a soft, slightly sweet maltiness alongside a faint sake-like umami depth. Pours with a distinctive pink-amber hue and fine carbonation. The nose offers ripe berry and mild floral notes; the palate is gently sweet with a clean, dry finish. At 7% ABV it drinks with more weight than a session ale, but the subtle grain character keeps it approachable.
On-trade positioning: A conversation piece for craft-forward menus — the pink hue and rice provenance give bar staff an easy and memorable story. Pairs well with Asian cuisine, particularly dishes that also work with sake: sushi, light broths, steamed seafood. Position alongside the White Ale and Daidai Ale for a three-variant Hitachino Nest flight.
